CFPB asks for ideas where to intervene

Aug. 6, 2012 – The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been filing amicus briefs in cases dealing with consumer financial services laws and is looking for new ideas of where to file more.

In an Aug. 2 blog posting aimed at consumers, bureau staffer Meredich Fuchs noted the CFPB has filed six amicus briefs in various cases over the past eight months. "These briefs allow us to share our position with courts considering significant questions about the interpretation of consumer finance laws or affecting our responsibilities," she explained.

Of the six briefs the CFPB has filed so far, four were submitted in connection with suits filed under the Truth in Lending Act, all dealing with a consumer's right of rescission under mortgage rules. One of these cases is pending against Fannie Mae. The other two were for cases related to the Fair Debt Collection Act.
