CFPB mortgage rulemaking eyed in webcast today

June 20, 2012 – Credit unions will get a look at current rules and plans for future rulemaking at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau during today's NAFCU webcast, "The Impact of the CFPB on the Future of Credit Unions," with speaker Suzanne Garwood.

Garwood is a partner in the firm of Venable LLP. She focuses her practice on state and federal law relating to consumer credit and financial services. She also has a background in credit union issues, having advocated for credit unions while working in regulatory affairs at NAFCU.

In today's webcast, Garwood will provide an overview of CFPB activities affecting all credit unions, including those not subject to direct CFPB supervision and enforcement. A portion of her presentation will focus on CFPB regulatory initiatives affecting all mortgage lenders. The CFPB is due to release proposed mortgage disclosure rules no later than July 21 that will accompany the disclosure forms being drafted under the CFPB's "Know Before You Owe" Initiative.

The disclosure forms will combine the disclosures required on residential mortgages under the Truth in Lending Act and Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act. The Dodd-Frank Act requires that final rules be completed by Jan. 1.

All credit unions, including NAFCU members and non-members, may register for today's webcast, which is slated for 2-3:30 p.m. Eastern. The program will be archived and remain available for one year. Register now.
