CFPB hearing on prepaid cards tomorrow

May 22, 2012 – Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray will discuss prepaid cards during a field hearing in Durham, N.C., Wednesday that will be streamed via the CFPB website.

The hearing is being organized to draw testimony on prepaid cards from consumer and civil rights groups, industry representatives and members of the public.

Prepaid cards are addressed to some extent in Regulation E, which transferred to the CFPB late last year. H.R. 5691, an overdraft protection opt-in bill introduced earlier this month by Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., calls for a CFPB study of overdraft fees on prepaid debit cards. Treasury is also testing the use of prepaid debit cards for federal tax refunds.

Anyone can attend Wednesday's field hearing, but they must send the CFPB an RSVP. The hearing begins at noon Eastern time at the Durham Convention Center Junior Ballroom. The convention center is located at 301 West Morgan St.

To RSVP, send the attendee's full name and organizational affiliation (if any), to cfpb.events@cfpb.gov.
