Marisic urges CU political involvement on CUbroadcast
Aug. 21, 2013 – NAFCU Vice President of Political Affairs Katie Marisic encouraged credit union leaders and supporters to reach out to lawmakers this year and make their voices heard on those issues vital to credit unions’ success and survival in an interview with CUbroadcast.
“It is important to be politically active now because Congress is focusing on legislation and more issues than they are on their election campaigns,” Marisic told CUbroadcast’s Mike Lawson. “The activities they are doing right now could really set the tone for the rest of the legislative cycle.”
Marisic mentioned that Congress is tackling some big-ticket items that do affect credit unions, including housing finance reform, taxes, debt ceiling and regulatory relief. Amidst all the issues Congress is addressing, she stressed the importance of making sure the credit union voice is heard.
“We want to make it as easy as possible,” Marisic said of reaching out to lawmakers. “You can visit NAFCU.org and visit our legislation and regulation page and take action.”
NAFCU offers easy-to-use tools for credit union representatives and supporters to contact their members of Congress and let them know how the issues they are tackling affect their business and credit union members, said Marisic.
Marisic also encouraged all credit unions to attend NAFCU’s Congressional Caucus in Washington, Sept. 8-11. “Caucus is for everyone,” she said. “Whether it’s your first time on the Hill or you’ve been to Caucus’ in the past, we have something for everyone.”
