Metsger sworn in as new NCUA Board member

In a small private ceremony on Capitol Hill Friday, Richard T. "Rick" Metsger was sworn into office as a NCUA Board member.

NAFCU President and CEO B. Dan Berger attended the ceremony. "We congratulate Mr. Metsger on his new post and look forward to working with him in his new role. He will be busy tackling many regulatory and supervisory issues that affect credit unions and we believe his past experience as a credit union board member will serve him well as he takes his place on the NCUA Board," Berger said.

NCUA General Counsel Michael McKenna delivered the oath of office to Metsger. David Shetler, who is currently the deputy director of the Office of National Examinations and Supervision, will serve as Metsger's interim senior policy advisor until a permanent candidate is selected. Metsger will participate in the board's Sept. 12 open meeting.

"It is an honor and privilege to join the NCUA Board," Metsger said in a press statement. "I will do everything within my power to fulfill the trust placed in me by the President and the Congress to ensure both the integrity and the continued safety and soundness of our nation's credit union system in a rapidly changing marketplace. For me, the most important task is the continued protection of the Share Insurance Fund, which protects credit union member deposits up to $250,000, from losses."

Metsger, a Democrat, is a former Oregon state senator. He was nominated to the NCUA Board May 16. His nomination was approved by the Senate Banking Committee June 27, and the full Senate confirmed him Aug. 1.

He succeeds former NCUA Board Member Gigi Hyland, who left the board last Oct. 5. His term continues through Aug. 2, 2017.
