Senate to vote on budget deal, defense authorization, nominations this week

Dec. 17, 2013 – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced a full Senate schedule this week, including votes on the House-passed budget, defense authorization and several nominations.

The budget legislation is scheduled for a cloture vote tomorrow where 60 votes are needed to avoid a GOP filibuster. NAFCU will closely follow the budget discussion in the Senate for any changes that may impact credit unions.

On Wednesday, the Senate is expected to pass H.R. 3304, the vehicle for the National Defense Authorization Act that was cleared by the House last week with a vote of 350-69. This package includes no changes in the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act and Military Lending Act. Credit unions serving any military servicemembers are subject to the SCRA and are potentially affected whenever Congress revisits the MLA.

The Senate also hopes to approve several nominees this week, including Janet Yellen to chair the Federal Reserve. Reid noted that he has no problem keeping the Senate in session until its work is done. The House concluded its session on Friday and won't return until next year.
