Cyber security order near

The president is expected to issue a cyber security order in the second half of the month, according to comments by Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Carper, D-Del., reported Friday by The Hill.

The report says the White House has been working on a draft of the order for the past several months and that Carper plans a joint hearing on it by his panel and the Commerce and Intelligence committees. "The administration is going to proffer next month an executive order, we think in the second half of February," Carper is reported saying.

The president could allude to the coming order in his Feb. 12 State of the Union address. Meanwhile, NAFCU is on Capitol Hill pressing for action on a critical cyber security issue facing credit unions and other depository institutions: merchant data breaches.

NAFCU is urgently pressing lawmakers for data security legislation that would require retailers and merchants to protect consumer data, pay for the costs of breaches on their end and inform consumers and their institutions expeditiously when a breach occurs.

Merchant data breaches, the quickening uptick in cyber attacks on financial institutions in general and what credit unions can do to protect their members' data will all be addressed during
NAFCU's Technology and Security Conference, slated Feb. 26-28 in Austin, Texas.

Participants will also see the latest in information technology solutions during the conference's Technology and Innovations Showcase. Register for the conference online.
