Jan. 22, 2013 – The past weekend was a whirlwind of activity in the nation’s capital as President Obama took his oath of office to a second term, and NAFCU representatives helped mark the occasion by attending a number of inaugural events held Saturday through Monday.
While the president and vice president were officially sworn in Sunday – the law requires that this take place Jan. 20 – there were numerous events held in and around the U.S. Capitol in celebration of the new term and leading up to the ceremonial swearing-in that would take place before the public on Monday.
NAFCU representatives, including Board Secretary Jeanne Kucey and President and CEO Fred Becker, made sure credit unions were represented.

On Saturday, Kucey (JetStream FCU), former association Board Member Alvin Cowans (McCoy FCU) and their spouses Mike and Shirley attended the Florida State Society Ball at Mellon Auditorium. The special guest, Vice President Biden, was introduced by Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla. Also seen were Florida Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (chair of the Democratic National Committee), Patrick Murphy, Jeff Miller, Lois Frankel, Corrine Brown and Frederica Wilson.
On Sunday, Kucey attended the Michigan Delegation coffee at the Rayburn House Office Building. Lawmakers there included Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow and Reps. Sander Levin, Gary Peters and Dan Kildee.
Accompanied by association staff, Kucey also attended Sunday’s Red, White and Blue Inaugural tribute to veterans of America’s armed forces at the Warner Theatre with Lynyrd Skynyrd. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, was among the attendees.
Kucey, Cowans, Becker and lobbyist Quincy Enoch also attended Monday’s Reserve Officers Association Medal of Honor Breakfast. The breakfast was held prior to the inaugural ceremonies and gave attendees time to visit with ROA staff and other participants.
