The Senate on Monday passed H.R. 152, which calls for $50.5 billion in aid related to Hurricane Sandy to fund emergency food assistance, construction, flood and storm damage assessments and more.

The bill was passed by the House two weeks ago by a vote of 241-180. Of the $50.5 billion designated for relief, $17 billion is allocated for storm victims in New York and New Jersey. This aid is in addition to a $9 billion measure approved earlier to temporarily increase borrowing authority for the National Flood Insurance Program.

The remaining amount will go toward longer-term recovery efforts and infrastructure improvements, and for programs and projects that will help guard against damage and losses in future disasters. Several federal agencies, including the Small Business Administration, will receive funding under these additional provisions.

The bill awaits the president's signature.
