Experts: DDoS attack threat for May 7

May 6, 2013 – The hacktivist group Anonymous has been warning banking and government websites of its plan for a distributed-denial-of-service attack on May 7 – a threat security experts are taking seriously.

Experts say American websites – especially government and small banking websites being targeted – are more at risk. Gregory Ogorek, director of security and response operations Cyveillance, a NAFCU Services preferred partner, said financial institutions should try to be as prepared as they can.

"The best thing you can do is to have a plan of action for if you are attacked – who's going to be called at 2 a.m.," Ogorek said. He also noted that having desegregated systems is important: although the website might go offline because of an attack, the online identification platform would still be functioning.

Credit unions can reach out to Cyveillance for help in the event of an attack, and Ogorek also recommended that they have their Internet service providers on speed-dial.
