CFPB updates Congress on fair lending enforcement

May 2, 2014 – CFPB sent Congress a fair lending report this week that highlights the bureau's enforcement actions under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Act during an 18-month period ending last December.

CFPB's report gives Congress an update on the bureau's efforts to fulfill its fair lending mandate and outlines its key priorities for its supervision and enforcement work. Covering the period of July 21, 2012, to Dec. 31, 2013, the report focuses on how CFPB targets its supervision to ensure financial institutions comply with federal consumer financial laws.

Noting its handling of financial institutions' ECOA and HMDA violations, CFPB highlights recent enforcement actions taken against two mortgage lenders for errors in their mortgage loan application data; a credit card company for discriminating against card applicants based on their ages, among other violations; and an indirect auto lender for charging minority borrowers a higher interest rate.

CFPB also touted its HMDA database and the release in the past year of two fair lending bulletins for consumers that detail fair lending practices in the home mortgage and auto lending markets.

As mandated by the Dodd-Frank Act, CFPB presents a fair lending report to Congress to fulfill its statutory obligation.
