House sues Obama over health care act

The Republican-led House of Representatives is suing President Barack Obama in response to what it says were unilateral changes made by the president to the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare."

The suit cites the delay of the implementation of the employer mandate to offer health insurance and a cost-sharing program between the government and insurers, according to Roll Call. The suit comes months after the House authorized it, and was filed with a new lawyer after two previous lawyers quit.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a statement that the changes to the ACA were made without Congress' approval in an unconstitutional manner. "If this president can get away with making his own laws, future presidents will have the ability to as well," Boehner said. "The House has an obligation to stand up for the Constitution, and that is exactly why we are pursuing this course of action."

Roll Call reported that there was also discussion in the GOP conference about suing the president over his executive orders altering immigration laws.

The ACA affects most businesses, including credit unions. NAFCU will monitor developments for their potential impact on credit unions. Links to ACA resources can be found here.
