Issa, Chabot join Caucus speaker slate

NAFCU's Congressional Caucus begins tomorrow with credit unions from around the nation preparing to hear from their elected officials, among them House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio.

Issa, a strong proponent of credit unions, speaks before Caucus participants Thursday. He joined with 323 other House members in a letter to NCUA raising concerns about the risk-based capital proposal and supports H.R. 688, the "Credit Union Small Business Jobs Creation Act," to raise the credit union member business lending cap. Issa has also criticized the suggestion that the U.S. Postal Service provide non-bank financial services and has pressed Target for internal documentation on the company's massive data breach.

Issa's committee has also held hearings on the Justice Department's Operation Choke Point. It released a report that found Justice acted to pressure banks to cut off legal businesses the Obama administration deemed "high risk."

Chabot serves on the House Judiciary, Small Business and Foreign Affairs committees. He is scheduled to speak during Wednesday's general session.

Caucus general sessions begin tomorrow morning and run through Friday. Following the daily general sessions, attendees will meet with their lawmakers and staff on Capitol Hill on key issues.

Among this year's speakers are:

  • CFPB Director Richard Cordray;
  • House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who speaks Wednesday evening during the Caucus Congressional Reception;
  • House Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Chairman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Ranking Member Greg Meeks, D-N.Y.;
  • keynoter Stuart Rothenberg, editor and publisher of the Rothenberg Political Report and columnist for Roll Call;
  • NCUA Board Member Rick Metsger; and
  • Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee.

Caucus registration is open to members and nonmembers.
