Pelosi, more greet CU reps at Caucus reception

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and other key House members conversed with credit union representatives attending NAFCU's Congressional Caucus during a Caucus reception on Capitol Hill.

The Congressional Reception, held last night at the Longworth House Office Building, also brought House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Maxine Waters, D-Calif., and others face to face with constituents in a social setting staged in the hearing room for the House Agriculture Committee.

Pelosi gave remarks to the group. Introduced by NAFCU Treasurer and Region III Director Jeanne Kucey, president and CEO of JetStream Federal Credit Union in Miami Lakes, Fla., lauded the growth in credit union membership to more than 98 million members this year, the 80th year after President Franklin Roosevelt's 1934 signing of the Federal Credit Union Act.

The first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, Pelosi served on the House Financial Services Committee when it was still the "Banking Committee." She recalled that when she joined that panel, she very early began to learn about credit unions and to forge a relationship with them that remains strong today.

To hearty applause, she lauded Roosevelt's vision in signing into law the measure that made the chartering of federal credit unions throughout the U.S. possible, action that she said underscored a commitment to the middle class and helping others to become a part of it.
