HUD creating housing counseling advisory panel

Credit unions interested in participating in a newly created Housing Counseling Federal Advisory Committee should submit their applications by May 14 to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The committee's charge is to advise the HUD Office of Housing Counseling on its mission to help people get the information they need to get, keep and improve housing through HUD-approved housing counseling agencies and HUD-certified counselors.

Created under the Dodd-Frank Act, the committee can have up to 12 members with staggered, three-year terms. The first time around, four seats will be for one-year terms and another four will be for two-year terms. Committee membership is to equally represent the mortgage and real estate industry, consumers and HUD-approved housing counseling agencies.

HUD says all committee members will serve in their individual capacities, not as representatives of any organizations. Applications must be made by those seeking to serve. See more details in HUD's notice.
