Landry's Inc., Safeway investigating data breaches

Landry's Inc. announced it is investigating reports of unauthorized charges on payment cards that were used at some of the hospitality chain's restaurants. The company has not said how many were affected in the possible breach.

Based on its preliminary reports, the company said this breach may involve a customer's name, card number, expiration date and verification code. The company manages restaurants including Bubba Gump, Claim Jumper, McCormick & Schmick's and Morton's.

Additionally, payment terminals at several Safeway grocery stores in California and Colorado have reportedly been compromised and criminals may have used the stolen card information and PIN numbers to make ATM withdrawals.

KrebsonSecurity reported Wednesday that several banking sources compared notes and found that all the affected customers had made their purchases from one of several specific lanes in different compromised stores.

Safeway confirmed it is investigating the skimming incidents. The grocery-store chain has not released a list of the affected stores.

NAFCU continues to urge Congress to pass legislation, such as H.R. 2205/S. 961, the "Data Security Act of 2015," which would set a national data security standard for retailers while acknowledging financial institutions' existing adherence to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. Just last week, H.R. 2205 was marked-up by the House Financial Services Committee and favorably reported to the House where it awaits further action.
