NCUA Report: DDoS attacks increasing

According to the June issue of The NCUA Report, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are on the rise at financial institutions, which were the target of 8.4 percent of DDoS attacks in the first quarter of 2015.

The Report cited data from cloud services provider Akamai, which said the number of DDoS attacks in the first quarter of 2015 increased by nearly 117 percent from the year before.

NCUA detailed signs that a DDoS attack has occurred, including antivirus software alerts and a "substantial" increase in network traffic. The Report cited Akamai as saying the use of malware in DDoS attacks is down, and that hacker are instead using "botnets, or a large network of compromised computers in conjunction with readily accessible crimeware toolkits to overwhelm a targeted network."
