NAFCU, GAO reps talk mortgage servicing rights

NAFCU's government affairs team discussed credit unions' use of mortgage servicing rights in a meeting Tuesday with Government Accountability Office representatives researching the topic at the request of the House Financial Services Committee.

GAO is looking at both credit unions' and small banks' involvement in mortgage servicing rights. It's focusing on key characteristics of the market for mortgage servicing rights and trends; factors affecting institutions' decisions to hold or sell such rights; and any known impact of such decisions on institutions' operations and consumers.

NAFCU has pushed NCUA to lower the risk-weighing for mortgage servicing assets under RBC2.

NAFCU representatives in Tuesday's discussion included Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and General Counsel Carrie Hunt, Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler, Director of Legislative Affairs Jillian Pevo, Director of Regulatory Affairs Alicia Nealon and Director of Regulatory Compliance JiJi Bahhur.
