Data breach at Starwood Hotels

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide said Friday that more than 50 of its hotels in the U.S. were affected by a data breach that allowed unauthorized parties to access some customers' payment card data.

A letter from Starwood president to customers links to the potential locations and dates the breach occurred, ranging anywhere from November 2014 through October. The letter also stated that certain restaurants, gift shops and other point-of-sale systems at the relevant Starwood properties were affected. The malware was designed to capture customers' names, card numbers, security codes and expiration dates.

Recently, the Trump Hotel Collection confirmed that seven of its hotels were attacked by malware over a 13-month period. The Hilton Hotel chain and Mandarin Oriental have also investigated data breaches this year.

NAFCU continues to push for a strong national data security standard for retailers and is urging Congress to act on H.R. 2205/S. 961, the "Data Security Act," this year.
