WSJ: Fraud on the rise at gas stations

Gas stations have been experiencing an "epidemic" of credit card fraud, according to The Wall Street Journal, and are attempting to fight back.

The Journal also noted that gas stations are bringing up the rear among merchants transitioning to EMV terminals.

Gas stations and credit card companies are using padlocks and software to try to combat the fraud, which sometimes involves criminals using a combination of hidden gas tanks to steal gas and false credit cards to pay. Gas stations are also frequent targets for "skimming" devices that steal credit card information from consumers paying at terminals. The Journal said that more than 100 such devices were found during a Florida-based investigation of gas stations in May.

NAFCU continues to push for stricter data security standards for merchants – akin to the standards credit unions and other financial institutions already follow. NAFCU has also noted that the transition to EMV will not be enough to stop fraud by itself. The association will continue to push for legislative action and a strong national standard for retailers.
