Berger, Hunt meet with Metsger, discuss FOM, 18-month exams

NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger with Executive Vice President of Government Affairs and General Counsel Carrie Hunt met with NCUA Board Vice Chairman Rick Metsger Tuesday to discuss field of membership and moving healthy credit unions back to an 18-month exam cycle.

"We appreciate Vice Chairman Metsger hearing the thoughts and concerns of the credit union industry on a number of important issues," says Berger. "Tuesday's meeting was positive, and we look forward to continuing our dialogue with Mr. Metsger on top credit union issues in the future."

Regarding field of membership, NAFCU believes more can be done to move the credit union industry into the 21st century and urged NCUA, in its official comment letter, to make several changes to its proposal issued last November.

The agency received more than 11,000 comment letters on the proposal, which seeks to provide regulatory relief for all charter types.

NAFCU has also repeatedly asked NCUA to return healthy credit unions to an 18-month exam cycle as it will save NCUA resources and relieve credit unions of the burden of more frequent exams. Credit unions are the only federally regulated depository institution subject to a strict, 12-month exam cycle at the federal level.
