NAFCU pushing CU reg relief over recess

NAFCU lobbyists continue to push the need for credit union regulatory relief over the congressional recess, most recently in a meeting Friday with senior staff of the House Financial Services Committee to discuss the "Financial CHOICE Act" from committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas.

In a letter to the chairman last month, NAFCU outlined its comments and concerns on the discussion draft of the bill and thanked Hensarling for his leadership in providing relief to credit unions. The association also expressed strong support for the draft's proposed repeal of the Dodd-Frank Act's Durbin amendment and noted its support for many of the other regulatory relief measures found in the discussion draft.

NAFCU staff also attended the Republican and Democratic National Conventions last month to talk about credit union regulatory relief, among other topics.

Congress is on recess for the next month, providing an important opportunity for credit unions to engage with lawmakers in their home districts on issues affecting the industry.

NAFCU Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler urged member credit unions to reach out to lawmakers while they're in town to discuss top credit union industry concerns. "They need to hear from their constituent credit unions on the need for regulatory relief and reforms such as repealing the Durbin amendment," said Thaler.

For help setting up meetings or weighing in with lawmakers during the recess, NAFCU members can contact NAFCU Director of Political Affairs Dan O'Brien at dobrien@nafcu.org or visit the association's Grassroots Action Center.
