House passes defense bill

The House on Friday voted 375 to 34 to pass the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act.

The Senate is expected to consider the bill this week. The bill authorizes $618.7 billion in defense funding and is the result of a compromise between the House and Senate Armed Services Committees.

The final bill did not include a Senate amendment that would have given military banks rent-free space on military bases. NAFCU had been following that provision to ensure it would not interfere with or disadvantage existing rent-free arrangements for military credit unions.
