Berger on Capitol Hill, meets with leaders

NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger this week met with House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller, R-Fla., and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., to discuss top credit union issues and NAFCU advocacy goals.

NAFCU Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler and Senior Associate Director of Legislative Affairs and Military Liaison Quincy Enoch attended Tuesday's meeting with Miller. Berger focused on issues pertaining to defense credit unions and thanked Miller for his legislation, H.R. 1133, which would exclude veterans' loans from the statutory credit union member business lending cap.

Miller reintroduced the NAFCU-backed legislation in March after first proposing the measure in 2014. The bill would cover loans to any veteran who served on active duty and was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.

Berger and NAFCU Executive Vice President of Government Affairs and General Counsel Carrie Hunt met with Hoyer Wednesday to discuss credit union regulatory relief, NAFCU's legislative agenda for 2016 and the association's continued push for a national data security standard for retailers.

The NAFCU-backed "Data Security Act," H.R. 2205, awaits further action after being cleared by the House Financial Services Committee in December. Enactment of national data security standards for retailers remains a top priority for NAFCU in 2016. The association encourages credit union members to contact their members of Congress to support H.R. 2205 by visiting NAFCU's Grassroots Action Center.
