New House task forces target tax, reg relief

Six newly formed committee-led task forces charged with creating an economic-growth agenda for issues including tax reform, regulatory relief and national security, were announced last week by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis. NAFCU remains vigilant on educating lawmakers on these issues and how they impact credit unions.

The task forces, made up of committee chairs of jurisdiction, will seek input from all House members and present their pro-growth findings to the country in the coming months.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, is charged with coming up with ways to create jobs, grow the economy and raise wages by reviewing the nation's tax code. Brady indicated last fall that he wants to pursue broad tax reform following this year's elections. NAFCU continues to educate lawmakers, including members on the Ways and Means Committee, about the value of credit unions' tax exemption.

The task force charged with easing the regulatory burden on small businesses includes, among others, Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas; Small Business Committee Chairman Steve Chabot, R-Ohio; and Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah.

Among those working to develop a strategy to confront national security threats are Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce, R-Calif.; Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas; and Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va.

"NAFCU continues its work with House members – including those appointed to these task forces – to ensure they are aware of and understand how these issues affect credit unions," said NAFCU Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler. "The association will continue to fight for easing of credit unions' regulatory burden and national data security standards to help protect American consumers from theft."
