Neugebauer eyes data security push

Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Texas, wants to get final action on consumer data security legislation this spring, The Hill reported.

The NAFCU-backed "Data Security Act" (H.R. 2205), introduced by Neugebauer and Rep. John Carney, D-Del., was cleared by the House Financial Services Committee last month and awaits House action. It would set national data protection standards, outline a process for breach notifications to card holders and make merchants accountable for breaches on their end.

A related bill on breach notification was cleared by the House Energy and Commerce Committee last spring and also awaits House action. Neugebauer, as quoted in The Hill, said he might try to get the two combined to push this issue through final House passage.

NAFCU has enactment of national data security standards as a top priority in 2016; association President and CEO Dan Berger wrote President Barack Obama Wednesday urging his support on data security and on regulatory relief for credit unions.
