Hillary Clinton touts reg relief for CUs

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, praised credit unions' small business lending Wednesday and touted the need for regulatory relief for the industry.

NAFCU has met with senior policy advisors for both Clinton and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump about the need for regulatory relief for credit unions.

"Small businesses – which should be the engine for creating new jobs across America – they need to be free of red tape, they need access to credit," Clinton said in a speech on the economy in Raleigh, N.C. "We need to slash unnecessary regulations, making it easier to get start-up capital from community banks and credit unions. If you have an idea for a small business, we want you to get started."

NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger expressed his appreciation for Clinton's remarks.

"We appreciate Secretary Clinton's acknowledgement of credit union lending, and she is absolutely right that credit unions are crucial for small businesses starting up around the country," Berger said. "We urge lawmakers at every level to take action to deliver effective regulatory relief to credit unions so they can do what they do best – help small businesses and families achieve their financial goals."

NAFCU continues to engage with both campaigns on credit union issues.
