DOJ seeks comments on Web accessibility matters under ADA

The Department of Justice is requesting comments on more than 120 questions regarding the proposed Web accessibility rule under the Americans with Disabilities Act in order to shape its future rulemaking efforts ensuring equal access to public entities' programs, services and activities.

At the end of April, the Justice Department issued a supplemental advance notice of proposed rulemaking to collect more specific information relating to the technical accessibility requirements to public entities' websites under title II of ADA.

Justice wants more information on whether or not alternative requirements are necessary for small public entities and the costs and benefits of Web accessibility that will help with preparing a regulatory impact analysis.

Along with the supplemental proposed rulemaking Justice released, the department said it "intends to conduct research and studies as necessary to better understand the benefits and costs of a Web accessibility regulation."

Part of the Justice Department's request for comments also concerns captioning requirements for live audio content, exemptions with regard to third-party content on websites and the treatment of archived information.
