NCUA's Laster talks savings, literacy at 'Saves' meeting

NCUA's Gail Laster talked about what credit unions and her agency are doing to encourage saving and good financial planning during at the America Saves National Savings Forum.

Laster heads NCUA's Office of Consumer Protection. NAFCU Senior Regulatory Affairs Counsel Michael Emancipator attended the meeting.

Laster highlighted the need for low- and moderate-income households to increase their savings and discussed the agency's efforts to increase financial literacy.

She also touted credit unions' efforts to help members save, especially with such tools and products as automated deposits, reverse-tiered savings accounts and accounts that combine savings with loans.

America Saves is a campaign managed by the Consumer Federation of America. America Saves also runs America Saves Week and Military Saves Week – annual programs encouraging good saving strategies. NAFCU participates in both programs.
