Berger to deliver remarks on NCUA budget Thursday

NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger will deliver remarks Thursday during the NCUA Board's budget briefing, noting concerns over its ever-increasing budget and how the agency should be looking to find cost savings wherever possible.

NCUA's budget briefing is slated from 2-4 p.m. Eastern Oct. 27 at the agency's headquarters in Alexandria, Va.

Earlier this month, NCUA released its discussion draft budgets for 2017 and 2018, which project $299.2 million and $313.1 million in spending, respectively, over those two years. The agency is accepting comments on the budget until Nov. 4.

NAFCU has long urged a return to public briefings held in advance of final budget approval. During his remarks Thursday, Berger will encourage the agency to find cost savings wherever possible to mitigate costs for credit unions, noting that the number of credit unions has decreased 25 percent since 2006. NCUA's budget has nearly doubled over the same period.

NCUA Board Chairman Rick Metsger first announced plans for the briefing during at NAFCU's Annual Conference in June.
