On Friday, two massive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks hit Dyn, a large domain name system (DNS) provider that serves Twitter, PayPal, Amazon and Netflix, among others, making those sites unavailable or slow.

KrebsOnSecurity noted that such attacks are continuing to grow in size.

"The size of these DDoS attacks has increased so much lately thanks largely to the broad availability of tools for compromising and leveraging the collective firepower of so-called Internet of Things devices — poorly secured Internet-based security cameras, digital video recorders (DVRs) and Internet routers," Krebs wrote.

A security expert told USA TODAY that the attacks might have come from a state actor, given their sophistication.

NCUA has warned credit unions of DDoS attacks being on the rise. The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council has issued risk-mitigation information about DDoS attacks.
