NAFCU at NIST cyber meeting Sept. 19

NAFCU Regulatory Affairs Counsel Andrew Morris is set to attend the Sept. 19 public meeting of the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, housed within the National Institute of Standards and Technology, on challenges and opportunities in securing the digital economy.

The meeting, set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern at American University in Washington, will address the current state of cybersecurity, how to grow and secure the digital economy, recent innovation and technology in the government and international concerns.

NIST released a cybersecurity framework in 2014, which NAFCU has urged the agency to promote as a model for self-governance. NAFCU believes that a voluntary framework better facilitates the adoption of best practices, and official guidance, like the cybersecurity assessment tool released by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council in 2015, demonstrates how a flexible approach to cybersecurity is critical to identifying evolving financial sector capabilities. NAFCU also continues to urge NIST to use its expertise to educate lawmakers and regulators about emerging cybersecurity threats and the need for multi-sector collaboration to prevent consumer data breaches.

On Friday, NAFCU Director of Regulatory Affairs Alexander Monterrubio sent a letter to the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity outlining the association's recommendations that it believes will enhance the effectiveness of the public-private partnership between NIST, stakeholders and financial regulators.
