House re-elects Speaker Ryan; 115th Congress continues organizing

The House on Tuesday voted to keep House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., in his post throughout the 115th Congress, as both the House and Senate continue to organize for the new session.

Senate Republicans on Tuesday also announced committee assignments for the new Congress. Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, is expected to be named Senate Banking Committee chairman; former Chairman Richard Shelby, R-Ala., will remain on the panel. New Republican members appointed to the committee include Sens. David Perdue of Georgia, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Kennedy of Louisiana.

Crapo has notedthat he expects the committee to be focused on housing market reforms, changes to the Dodd-Frank Act and the reduction of credit unions' and community banks' regulatory burdens in the year ahead.

New Republican members on the Senate Appropriations Committee include Sens. John Kennedy of Louisiana and Marco Rubio of Florida. Republican senators joining the Senate Budget Committee include Cory Gardner of Colorado, John Kennedy of Louisiana and John Boozman of Arkansas.

The House is expected to name committee assignments soon; House leaders have already announced committee chairmanships for the 115th Congress.
