NAFCU testifies on data/cybersecurity, SBA lending next week

NAFCU member representatives will testify for the association on the need for a national data security standard and the importance of credit union small business lending during House committee hearings next week.

Chevron Federal Credit Union President and CEO Jim Mooney will testify on behalf of NAFCU before the House Small Business Committee regarding cyber and data security issues on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Eastern. Mooney is also NAFCU's Cybersecurity Committee Chair.

The hearing, "Small Business Cybersecurity: Federal Resources and Coordination," will also include testimony from the acting chairman of the Federal Trade Commission and a representative of the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Thursday, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer Sonya McDonald will testify on behalf of NAFCU before the House Small Business Subcommittee on Investigations, Oversight and Regulations, also at 11 a.m. Eastern.

The hearing, "An Overview of SBA's 7(a) Loan Program," will also include testimony from a representative of the Independent Community Bankers of America and the National Association of Government Guaranteed Lenders.

NAFCU continues to push for Congress to pass a strong national data security standard for retailers that would hold them to the same standards credit unions already follow under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. Regarding the Small Business Administration, NAFCU signed a three-year memorandum of understanding in 2015 with the SBA aimed at getting more credit unions to increase their lending to member-small businesses through SBA micro loan programs.
