CUs reminded of assistance during California wildfires

Credit unions are reminded that the NCUA stands ready to assist those institutions needing help after wildfires have burned up more than 213,000 acres in California during the past week. Around 40,000 people have been evacuated and some 5,700 homes and other buildings destroyed by these fires.

Such aid from the NCUA includes urgent needs grants for qualifying credit unions, guaranteed lines of credit through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) and the ability to provide emergency financial services for non-members.

"We are thinking and praying for all those affected by these fires and the firefighters who are working day and night to contain them," said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. "We thank the NCUA for standing by and helping federally-insured credit unions during this disaster."

Credit union member deposits are protected by the NCUSIF. The NCUSIF covers individual accounts up to $250,000, and a member's interest in all joint accounts combined is insured up to $250,000. The fund also separately protects IRA and KEOGH retirement accounts up to $250,000.

For those credit unions needing additional resources, the NCUA has available hurricane and disaster preparedness recovery information.
