Credit union leaders attending NAFCU's sold-out Management and Leadership Institute in San Diego yesterday, participated in a full-day workshop, "The Leader of the Future," led by John Spence, who focused on how to be an effective credit union leader and lead a high-performing team.

Monday's program began with a welcome address by NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger, who emphasized the importance of leadership learning to help ensure a winning credit union culture.

During the first day's workshop, Spence discussed the top 10 attributes that all leaders possess, the importance of values-based leadership and the leadership competency model, which can improve staff management skills.

He also gave credit union leaders tips on how to develop a personal leadership plan and how to retain top talent at their credit unions.

Each credit union leader received a free, signed copy of Spence's book, "Awesomely Simple: Essential Business Strategies for Turning Ideas Into Action," as well as a free, signed copy of Berger and NAFCU Executive Vice President and COO Anthony Demangone's book, "Managing and Leading Well: It Ain't Rocket Science, But It's Still Hard Work!"

Throughout the week, credit union leaders are working in small groups on an assigned credit union case study and will presen their results Friday.

Today, credit union leaders will hear from:

  • Stacey Hanke, founder and communication expert of Stacey Hanke, Inc.;
  • Dave Boden, president and CEO of Hiway Federal Credit Union;
