Hunt in CU Times: Let's get a positive environment for CUs
NAFCU's Carrie Hunt, in an opinion piece published online Friday by Credit Union Times, underscores the importance of everyone in the credit union industry engaging with lawmakers and others in order to ensure a positive environment for credit unions.
Hunt, NAFCU's executive vice president for government affairs and general counsel, says progress may be slow on winning relief from regulatory compliance burdens, but she says lawmakers, regulators and others are listening
Among the positive signs is Treasury's inclusion its report this summer on financial industry relief of several recommendations advanced by NAFCU in its 2016 Report on Credit Unions. She also notes discussions and the engagement shown by policymakers in congressional hearings, at regulatory agencies and the White House regarding matters of key concern to credit unions and their members.
"To drive momentum, we need everyone in the industry – credit unions, credit union organizations as well as their consumer-members – to engage with lawmakers, regulators and policymakers on ways to help the nation's Main Street credit unions reach more consumers and small businesses – and help grow our economy," she says.
Hunt emphasizes credit unions' role as champions of Main Street, and she delves into the five tenets that guide NAFCU's work to ensure a positive environment that will help them grow and strengthen America's economy – work that is the focus of credit union leaders in Washington this week for NAFCU's Congressional Caucus.
For more, see Hunt's full op-ed, which is also in the Sept. 13 print edition of CU Times.
