Kevin Warsh plans to leave the board on or around March 31, the Fed announced Thursday.

Warsh submitted a brief, six-line letter to the president, noting he is “honored to have served at a time of great consequence” but stating no reason for stepping down.

Warsh joined the Fed Board in February 2006, focusing mostly on the financial markets and monetary policy. Before joining the Fed, he served four years as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and Executive Secretary of the White House National Economic Council. He was at Morgan Stanley & Co. before that.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said Warsh provided “exemplary service” while on the board. “In particular, his intimate knowledge of financial markets and institutions proved invaluable during the recent crisis,” he said.

NAFCU’s board and Warsh discussed the housing finance downturn during the board’s December 2007 meeting at the Fed.
