NAFCU engaged in Financial Literacy Month
Jan. 22, 2008—This April is Financial Literacy Month, and NAFCU, a partner in the Jump$tart Coalition, is working to help get people thinking about financial literacy and draw attention to the wide array of programs and services under way to promote it.
NAFCU contributed an article to the coalition’s Fall 2007 UPDATE publication that touts a number of financial literacy projects underway at LA DOTD FCU of Denham Springs, La.
LA DOTD, a member of NAFCU, has established two student credit union branches (for Saint Isidore Catholic School, an elementary school; and the Staring Education Center, a middle school for over-age youth) and sponsors a number of other programs aimed at teaching young people about the value of sound personal financial management. One of these is a skit titled “Captain Coin and Pirate Penny’s High Seas Adventure in Savings,” to get younger people engaged in learning about saving.
The article notes that more than 7,000 students have attended the credit union’s financial education programs since August 2006. The credit union’s efforts were recognized last April by Treasury with a John Sherman Award for Excellence in Financial Education and featured in an educational video for teachers in Japan.
The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy was formed in 1995 encourage the inclusion of basic personal management skills in K-12 education curricula.
