Inside NAFCU

Make your connection in Chicago

It’s home to well-known attractions such as Millennium Park and the Magnificent Mile, and from July 20–24, the city of Chicago will host NAFCU’s 43rd Annual Conference and Exhibition. Credit union delegates from across the country will arrive in the Windy City to connect with each other, industry leaders, experts and regulators. And when they depart, they will take away the latest information concerning the ever-evolving credit union industry as well as strategies to put in place the minute they return to their institutions. Credit unions looking to enrich their boards, management and overall growth will want to take advantage of all NAFCU’s Annual Conference has to offer.

Customized learning tracks

NAFCU designs and shapes its Annual Conference to bring credit unions the most innovative solutions so they can operate at their best, while continuing to serve as their members’ financial advocate. To ensure credit unions can tailor their Annual Conference experience to their specific needs, the conference offers multiple education sessions along six tracks. They include:

  • credit union board and committee;
  • executive;
  • management and operations;
  • regulatory and finance;
  • growth and lending; and
  • defense credit unions.

Industry-leading experts

By attending the conference, credit unions can learn the latest executive compensation trends, essential elements of successful mergers and effective strategies for using their positive reputation to their advantage in these challenging times. Also, the conference brings credit unions an opportunity to hear the perspectives of NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz and NCUA Board Members Michael Fryzel and Gigi Hyland. Creating a personalized schedule for educational sessions featured at the conference is easy, thanks to an Agenda Builder posted on the Annual Conference Web site www.nafcu-annual.org.

NAFCU’s Annual Conference will also introduce participants to the industry’s leading products and service providers through its Annual Exhibition. Industry experts such as CMC and Ascensus will be on hand. Conference participants can also discover fresh ideas at the Credit Union Solutions Theater, which will be located in a special section of the Exhibition Hall adjacent to the NAFCU Services Preferred Partner Pavilion.

Nationally known speakers

NAFCU has designed the conference to not only be a source of information but to stir inspiration in credit unions as well. On July 21, during the opening general session, legendary NFL star and Hall-of-Famer Mike Ditka will impart key principles of effective leadership — principles he put into practice when he led the Chicago Bears to Super Bowl XX. He coached the team for 11 years, garnering Coach of the Year honors for that championship game. Presently, Ditka is on “Sunday NFL Countdown,” ESPN Radio and SportsCenter.

On July 24, Bill Kurtis, host of the Emmy-nominated “Cold Case Files” and “Investigative Reports,” will address the conference during the closing brunch. His remarks will focus on ways that credit unions can give back to their communities and affect peoples’ lives through their work. Over the past 35 years, Kurtis has been a documentary host, producer, news anchor and multimedia production company president. As a network newsman, he covered the Charles Manson trial and is credited with breaking the Agent Orange story. The company he founded, Kurtis Productions, produces crime and news programs for A&E Television Networks.

And some old-fashioned fun

NAFCU will also take conference participants “out to the ballgame” on the afternoon of July 23 to see the Chicago Cubs play against their division rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals. Each credit union delegate registration, spouse/guest program and social events package will include a ticket for the game. Tickets are first-come, first-served and extra ticket sales will be limited.

Other special events have been planned for conference goers. On July 20, participants can work on their swing during the 8th Annual NAFCU Friends Golf Tournament, which will take place at Harborside International Golf Center. On July 22, participants can sail along Lake Michigan and take in the Chicago skyline during a cruise aboard the Spirit of Chicago. Registration for both events will go toward NAFCU’s Political Administrative Fund, which supports NAFCU’s grassroots and political activities and ensures that credit unions’ concerns are heard on Capitol Hill.

From the educational offerings to the motivating keynote speakers, NAFCU’s 43rd Annual Conference and Exhibition promises to be the must-attend event of the year for credit unions. Registration discounts for the conference are in effect until June 4. For more information regarding this year’s Annual Conference, visit www.nafcu-annual.org.
