
Karen Tyson was named senior vice president of marketing and communications in August 2011. She oversees NAFCU’s publications, public relations and marketing programs, website and special projects.
Tyson has over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. Prior to NAFCU, Tyson served as senior vice president of communications for the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA), where she spearheaded a number of award-winning advertising and communications initiatives to distinguish community banks from Wall Street banks during the financial crisis and debate over the Dodd-Frank Act.
Before joining ICBA, Tyson was vice president of communications for the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB) and was director of communications for the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) for 10 years.
Tyson is an active member of the American Society of Association Executives, having served on the communications section council.
She has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in Blacksburg, Va.
