Media Relations Tips

The United Nations designated 2012 as the International Year of the Cooperatives to recognize the unique role cooperatives play in social and economic development. The theme for the celebration is "Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better World." In line with this kick-off, here are some tips to help celebrate cooperatives:

  1. Hold an open house. Encourage your volunteers to share their unique perspective as both members and credit union leaders. Also, invite media and community leaders to attend.
  2. Use newsletters. Tell your members about ways your credit union’s cooperative nature benefits them, such as how their member-owned, member-operated business model often translates to low fees and competitive rates.
  3. Use social media. Use your credit union’s Twitter and Facebook pages to share fun facts about your credit union as well as cooperatives in general. For tweets, be sure to use the #coops2012 hash tag.
