NAFCU offers a certification program for any person interested in obtaining a solid foundation of the compliance issues facing credit unions. This prestigious designation was designed by credit union experts and tailored for credit union personnel. Obtaining your NCCO establishes you as a serious compliance professional with a comprehensive understanding of the major regulations that govern credit union operations. There is no requirement to be affiliated with NAFCU to take the exams and obtain your NCCO. The NCCO can be obtained by credit union employees, attorneys, vendors, consultants and any other person seeking a thorough understanding of the rules and regulations impacting credit unions.
To become certified, an individual must pass all four examinations. Examinations can be taken at NAFCU’s Regulatory Compliance School (School) or at the credit union’s office (with a proctor). Individuals can take all of the exams at one time or they can choose to take the exams individually. In short – pass all four exams and you become a NAFCU Certified Compliance Officer (NCCO)!
Exam Structure. Each exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions. The exams contain a mix of True/False, Yes/No and complex multiple-choice questions. Passing is 76% correct (38/50).
Retaking Exams. If you do not pass an exam, you can reorder the necessary exam and take the exam at your credit union at a later date. Similarly, if you take all four exams at School and pass two – you would only need to pass the other two exams to become certified as an NCCO.
Recertification. Pass all four exams and you never need to take the exams again. NCCOs need to recertify every two years to retain their certification. Recertification can be achieved by earning 24 Continuing Education Units (preferred) or by retaking the exams.
Continuing Education Units. NCCOs can earn CEUs by attending NAFCU’s Regulatory Compliance Seminar (24 CEUs); by attending NAFCU compliance webcasts (1.5 CEUs each) or other compliance-related training. If you have a question on CEUs, please email ncco@nafcu.org.

"NAFCU's Regulatory Compliance School was a very valuable and worthwhile program. Sending that special person or officer to get that level of training is well worth the dollars spent. It is a challenging course to take and when you complete it and pass the exams, you feel that you have earned the designation and accomplished something important." - John L. Meeks, NCCO, Vons FCU |
