Obama picks Metsger for NCUA Board
May 16, 2013 – The president last night announced his intention to nominate Rick Metsger, a past credit union volunteer and former state senator in Oregon, to a term on the NCUA Board.
"We congratulate former Oregon state Sen. Rick Metsger on his nomination to the NCUA Board. In recent years, the board has had to deal with very difficult issues. The board will need to continue to tackle those issues and more in the coming years," said NAFCU President and CEO Fred Becker. "Upon his confirmation, we look forward to working with him and the NCUA Board and staff on behalf of our members to promote a positive regulatory environment for credit unions."
The NCUA Board has been operating with one vacancy since the departure last October of Board Member Gigi Hyland. Hyland's term expired in August 2011.
Metsger, a Democrat, served in Oregon's senate from 1999-2011. He was a candidate for secretary of state and treasurer but lost both bids. Since 2010, he has served as president of Parakletos Strategic Public Affairs LLC. He has also served as a television news anchor in Portland, Ore.; was on Oregon's State Treasury Debt Public Policy Advisory Commission from 2001-2011; and from 1993-2001 was on the board of Portland Teachers CU. He received a bachelor of science degree and master of arts degree in teaching from Lewis & Clark College.
