A pending IRS rule has some credit unions worried about the fate of their deferred compensation plans. Small Business Lending Index Report April 2012 (Article) (May 9, 2012)
The Biz2Credit Small Business Lending Index, an analysis of 1,000 loan applications on Biz2Credit.com, found that loan approvals by big banks dropped from 10.9% in March to 10.6% in April and from the 11.6% approval rate last March. Additionally, small bank lending fell from 47.6% in March to 45.9% in April 2012.
Some Good News about Deferred Compensation (Article) (May 9, 2012)
A pending IRS rule has some credit unions worried about the fate of their deferred compensation plans. For some eight years now, the IRS has been considered the tax status of non-qualified deferred compensation plans offered by federal credit unions (FCUs). At issue is whether FCUs are entities of the federal government. In its analysis, the IRS concluded that FCUs are not because they are not federal instrumentalities. The IRS also had the option of finding that FCUs are eligible to offer these compensation plans because they are tax exempt organizations.

Meanwhile, small bank lending remained flat in March 2012.

Small Business Lending Index Report January 2011 (Article) (April 3, 2012)
The Biz2Credit Small Business Lending Index, an analysis of 1,000 loan applications on Biz2credit.com, found that approval rates of small business financing requests in January by small banks and non-bank lenders increased to their highest levels in the past 12 months. Meanwhile, lending at big banks jumped two percentage points over December's rate to 11.7%, the highest rate since February 2011.
