- FinCEN reports rise in foreclosure scams
Financial institutions filed 2,360 foreclosure rescue-related suspicious activity reports in the first half of 2012, a pace that appears on track to exceed the 2,782 total for 2011, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network reported Wednesday.
- Becker urges Senate to back cyber bill amendment
The cyber security bill being debated in the Senate would be improved if it included a NAFCU-backed amendment requiring non-financial institutions to have the same type of data safeguard protections that credit unions have under Gramm-Leach-Bliley, NAFCU President and CEO Fred Becker told Senate leaders Tuesday.

The Federal Financial Institution Examination Council said Tuesday it views cloud computing as having the same basic risk characteristics as traditional forms of outsourcing, so financial institutions may need to put in place more robust controls to use the service.

Credit unions have a “watchdog” looking out for their interests, overseeing operations and ensuring their records are maintained with honesty and integrity: the supervisory committee. The committee has a host of tools at its disposal to carry out its purpose, including an annual audit of the credit union. Information gleaned from this audit assists the committee in evaluating credit union operations and in making recommendations to the board. The supervisory committee may also perform surprise cash counts, review non-financial transactions or reconcile credit union accounts with an eye toward compliance with laws and regulations. All these activities place the committee in a prime position to catch suspicious transactions or behaviors that may indicate fraud.
