Berger hails 80th FCU Act anniversary

June 26, 2014 – NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger today recognized the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Federal Credit Union Act and noted the association's appreciation for credit unions' exemplary service to their consumer-members "each and every day."

"NAFCU is honored to have played a key role in federal credit unions' rich history over the past 47 years," Berger said.

The Federal Credit Union Act was signed June 26, 1934, by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Berger noted the importance of this statute in creating a federal charter option that ensures consumers the ability to establish a credit union anywhere in the nation. He also underscored credit unions' important role in ensuring a healthy economy.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., commemorates the FCU Act signing in a statement published in the Congressional Record, noting, "Credit unions are part of the great fabric that makes our country strong."

"We will continue to work with Congress and regulators to promote and strengthen the federal charter," Berger said, "and to ensure prosperity for the more than 97 million consumers (and counting) who choose credit unions."
