NAFCU seeks CUs' input on proposed advertising changes

NAFCU is seeking credit unions' input on the NCUA's proposal to grant additional flexibility when using the agency's "official advertising statement." NAFCU made the request and provided an overview of the proposed changes in a Regulatory Alert issued yesterday.

Under the NCUA's proposed rule, federally-insured credit unions (FICUs) would:

  • be allowed to use "Insured by NCUA" in advertisements as a new version of the official advertising statement;
  • not be required to include the NCUA's official advertising statement on annual reports and other statements of condition required to be published by law; and
  • not be required to include the official advertising statement on TV and radio advertisements that are less than 30 seconds long.

The NCUA also requests comment about whether the rule should be modified to facilitate advertising on social media, mobile banking and other digital communication platforms.

NAFCU, as part of its core tenets for a healthy regulatory environment, supports the NCUA's efforts to provide credit unions with regulatory relief while also ensuring appropriate, tailored regulation.

Credit unions' comments on this proposed rule are due to NAFCU by Nov. 20; official comments are due to the NCUA by Dec. 4.
