NAFCU's 2018 Top Priorities Strengthen Watchdog Focus, Promote Credit Union Growth

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington (Jan. 4, 2018) – Championing the credit union industry's best interests in the year ahead, the National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU) will sharpen its focus as a federal government watchdog through its 2018 advocacy priorities. These priorities, announced today, include supporting a regulatory environment that allows credit unions to grow and achieving appropriate, meaningful regulatory relief.

"2017 was a tremendous year for credit unions, and NAFCU will carry that the same momentum into 2018," said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. "NAFCU does not take lightly our role as the industry's top Washington watchdog, and we are committed to advocating for the best interests of all federally-insured credit unions at the federal level."

NAFCU's strategy is built to help preserve the industry's federal tax exemption, defend the secondary mortgage market, pursue an efficient and competitive capital system, reduce regulatory burden and enact a national data security standard. The following is a summary of NAFCU's top legislative and regulatory priorities for 2018:

  • creating a legislative and regulatory environment that allows credit unions to grow;
  • seeking appropriate, tailored rules for credit unions as well as legislative and regulatory relief from growing burdens;
  • ensuring a fair playing field – through regulatory and legislative processes – so credit unions have as many opportunities as banks and non-regulated entities to provide provident credit to the nation's consumers;
  • supporting transparency and independent oversight of all regulators, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB); and
  • maintaining a strong, independent National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) as the primary regulator for credit unions.
