20 dos and don'ts to make a good first impression

Dan with memberLast week, I blogged about the importance of first impressions and how in just milliseconds, someone can make a judgement about you that, if not in your favor, can be a real challenge to overcome.

I came across an article this week that further expands on how to make a good first impression by offering 20 things to do, and not to do, when meeting someone for the first time.

"Since a first impression is the starting point for meaningful and lasting relationships, it's imperative to continually hone your communication skills," writes Andrew Thomas, founder of Skybell Video Doorbell. Here are some suggestions from his list of 20 dos and don'ts:

  • Greet others with a smile and a firm handshake.
  • Be curious and genuinely interested in other people.
  • Don't interrupt others when they're talking.
  • Make an offer to help or support them. If they suggest something, then follow through.
  • Actually listen to other people.
  • Practice good body language and posture.
  • Don't complain.
  • If you're shy or an introvert, then ask a lot of questions.
  • Don't just collect a business card and split.
  • Have fun.
  • Maintain eye contact
  • Connect online.

I encourage you to read his full list here. Another good suggestion he offers: Ask someone you trust to go over this list with you and tell you which of things you do or do not do well. Adopting good self-awareness tips will only ensure others see us as we want to be seen.
